Astoria, OR

Whoah, 2 posts in 2 days! Go grab a snack, this might take a while to get through....

We took our little Goonies to the coast. First stop: the Walsh residence for some truffle shuffle action. Then off to view some stinky sea lions, take a climb up the Astoria Column, watch some Lewis & Clark presentations, try our hand at quill writing, investigate a ship wreck, and then fill our drawers with sand at the beach.

I descended the Astoria column shortly after I marched up there, and my legs were shaking all the way down. I don't know if it was because I was lugging our toddler up and down all 164 steps with out-of-stair-stepping-shape legs, or if they were shaking because of fear. I never have had a fear of heights before, but I definitely have a fear of the possibility of my kids toppling over the edge of high places, and splatting on the cement below. It didn't help that there was a drunk buffoon up there at the same time with us, making me even more nervous. I actually had the thought that he would pick up one of my children, and dangle them over the edge in his drunken state of unpredictability. Not a good place for unpredictability.

The ship wreck is the Peter Iredale ship, which ran aground in 1906 and has been slowly sinking deeper and deeper ever since. All that is visible these days are the skeletal, steel remains of the rusted bow and a few masts. The perfect jungle gym for boys, at least until the tide comes in!

Ft. Clatsop, home to the Lewis & Clark Corps of discovery for 3 months. You know, those historically-important guys that went exploring with Sacajawea. Lots for the kids to learn and see, plus we left with the three oldest kids earning the title of Junior Ranger. Also, I'm lovin' the perfectly-timed shot of the flintlock gun demo! Thank you very much.
PS- Dan was there too.
